This one's mainly aimed at Mick - Mick could you give me those bread 'recipes' for ground bait and paste that you talked me through when we spoke recently?

Hi Alan. Sorry for delayed response matey. I've only just seen the topic. Saw "Fishing" and thought, ah haaa,,, this'll do for me.
Here goes pal.
Basically its for mullet fishing in a harbour.
Groundbait
1, Get a couple of Bimbo loaves, lay the slices on a tray & let em dry out a little (don't want em too doughey) 2, Remove crusts and put them through the old food processor. 3, Put the processed bread in a couple of plastic bags,(DON'T squeeze it together) and freeze em for a few days. 4, Take processed bread out of freezer, and whilst in a semi frozen state (break chunks off) put them through the processor a 2nd time. ( If your going fishing on the same day, just put the processed bread back in the plastic bags & seal)
When fishing, squeeze balls of groundbait (about half the size of a golfball together) and throw in on top of float. Don't overfeed Alan, as bread soon fills em up. Just drip feed. Keep a little cloud of bread goin through the water every so often. The mullet will come to the little cloud, and hopefully snaffle your hookbait !!
Hookbait
I would buy English bread for this Alan; Warby's or the likes.
You can either;
1, Use it fresh on the hook. Just squeeze a piece between thumb & index finger around the shank & bend of the hook. Thats called breadflake. ( I used to use it a lot when fishing for crucian carp, or for BIG BREAM fishing. Or try a piece of the crust on the hook. Hook it just like a maggot, but gently squeeze it on the bend of the hook If you use the above;( Keep the bread "not in use" well covered in Lanza, or else it will dry out and be rendered useless)
Or method 2. Take the crusts off the Warby's, (4 or 5 slices will suffice) Place the slices in a piece of cloth. I find white towelling best for this. Trap the bread inside the cloth and run it under the cold tap for about 15-30 seconds, or until the bread has absorbed some water. Squeeze both the cloth & trapped bread (to remove excess water) untill the bread feels like it has binded together. Again, keep in a sealed bag. To fish with this, just tear off a small piece, and mould it round the shank & bend of your hook. Being careful not to mask the point.
Feed processed bread as above.
I'll bring ya some good hooks over when I come Al; 8s & 10s Tubertini's, and show ya how to tie em. That is unless you already know ?? In fact, I think I've got a spare Drennan hooktyer. That should make life a lot simpler pal.
Hope this helps matey
Mick

I agree. So guys I need to prepare for my dad's next fishing expedition in Lanzarote when we're there at xmas. For various reasons he hasn't had a chance to get back to PB since last December and he now needs to top the success we had last Boxing Day off Coloradas Beach with bait consisting of half a raw melted frozen prawn (including shell) which I got from Pedros Supermercado. After 3 casts we caught a dogfish or mini shark more than a foot long. This year he's thinking of going west from the harbour towards Timanfaya Palace where diver friends have said the water's teeming with fish. He needs like minded pals - any chance of a Canary Nightlife fishing expedition? Mick are you there over Xmas? Bart - what about you and Sam? I'll deliver beer at suitable intervals. Josie xx

Hi Josie.
Yea, I'm over for the festive season. Hoping, work allowing, to be comin out on 14th Dec till 11th Jan. Anything ya need to know (about fishing) give me a holler. No probs. I do a lot of freshwater match fishing in England. But I can relate to sea fishing just the same. Gonna send ya a PM Josie. Bit of summat for you to have a look at.

Thanks Mick Here's the fish in question - not a very good pic but you get the general idea! By the way can you get away with mullet fishing in the Lanzarote harbours? There's lots of signs saying don't do it but there are literally 1000's of fat fish in PB harbour and Puerto Calero!

Hi Josie
Got the photo kiddo. Its deffo a dogfish, or as posh folk call em "Rock Salmon" !! Now there's one for ya to tell your friends eh !! ha ha... Not sure about the rules & regs in Lanza ?? I think it would be common courtesy to ask first. I've actually done a bit of mullet fishing in harbours in various places abroad; Ibiza town centre, Majorca & Cambrillis near Salou. But it was quite a few years ago.. Good fun though !! If we ever do get the chance to share a bit of fishing & a chat Josie. I'll tell ya a tale of something I saw last Christmas whilst layin on the beach in PDC, about a fisherman, its absolutely true & will have ya in stitches !! Tooo long to post in a message, but trust me, its a belter.... I saw it with my own eyes !!
Mick. If ya need any info Josie. Elle has my e-mail address. Feel free, no probs whatsoever....

Thanks for that Mick - will give it a go soon. Sam got really into his fishing when he was here in the summer so it will give me a push to get out a bit more. Every time I go I regret not bringing my boat! Anyway, on the harbours - no you aren't allowed to fish in side the harbours or marina - but thee are - I'm told - plenty of Mullet on the outside wall of the harbour....

Another little thing to try is liquidised sweetcorn. Put a couple of tins through the old blender, so its a sorta "semi-slop",,, use it as "groundbait soup", fish with 1 or 2 pieces of corn on the hook. The "slop" makes a cloud in the water.Cheap n cheerful fishing !!

A lot of things in angling have been discovered by accident or experiment Alan. Have a look at that "up in the water" maggot feeder rig on the "Loch Ken" write up I did for L/Angler. When I set that up everyone laughed at me,,,they said it was all wrong, and if you look at it, it actually is. Everything is "back to front" !! They weren't laughin 6 hours later when I walked off with £500 winnings !! That was just something I tried that paid off... "quite well" !! On the other hand. Some things I've experimented with have been disastrous.... but, as they say, "if ya don't try it, you'll never know". Mick

I was actually thinking of trying a swimfeeder on the sliding float I use here instead of just the lead weight - I think it might work really well with your groundbait recipe. Couldn't find them in the local tackle shops - and couldn't find my old tackle when I was at my dad's place recently. He's probably put the box away 'safe' somewhere....
