Hi Roz, and welcome to the forum.
Your first port of call will definitely be your vet... as they will know what paperwork you need. Regarding the hay etc - I know just the person with all the answers... as she hsa horses here. I shall get her to pop in and have a natter to you.

I thought about transporting my horse from the UK but decided against it due to life here for horses being very difficult and the terraine on their feet very hard. For that reason i found an excellent home for Chianti in the Uk and she is very happy competeing in events.
I bought my mare from the Penninsula she is Spanish and bred for the climate. I keep her at the complejo which is a club run by the members I pay 200 Euro a month for full livery including food. You can suppliment the feed buy buying hay to feed yourself but English hay here is very very expensive around 25 euro a bale. They tend to feed straw (Paca) here or Vesaveina (dont think I spelt that right) which is a mixed straw and some grass I am not sure which. My mare does very well so I dont suppliment her feed.
They can live out in sand Paddocks and we put Paca out for them. The Spanish stable managers are very knowledgeable and you can learn from them, it is very different keeping horses here to the UK. I prefer the full livery option because I am so busy and cannot guarantee being there everyday like I could in the UK and she still recognises me and has bonded with me .. something I never thought possible without doing all the work myself. The lovely thing is that my time with her is quality time and not time spent mucking out lol
The riding here is fantastic mostly off road I take my dogs with me and we go for hours without crossing roads although there are off road tracks that the occaisional car uses.
Forget tack shops stocking the stiff you get in the UK they dont exist.. better to buy online or bring stuff back when you go to the UK. The vets are OK but again not as high tech as the UK and colic remedies are kept in stock at the yard.. it is better now than a few years ago we seem to have a couple of horse vets here now but experts are usually flown in from Las Palmas.
There are a few blacksmiths and again they are getting better every year a few years ago they were not well trained, mine travels over from Fuerteventura and I personally have not had a problem with her feet.
please feel fre tocontact me direct on 00 34 928843285 if you want to chat firther or if there is something I havnt covered.

Many thanks for the information.
We are occassional happy hackers and our horses are more pets. In fact, my x shire, Sara follows me round the yard like a dog. It is quite amusing as she is 17.2 hands and understands most vocal commands - not that she always does as she is told!
The girls are all rescue animals and knowing how they have suffered in the past means we cannot bear to leave them.
Ideally if possible we would like to rent some land and look after them ourselves as we do here. Do you think that may be possible on Lanzarote?
Will give you a ring Sally Ann.
Thanks again all for your help.

Not sure about renting land, I am sure it is possible but my advice is use a livery yard for at least the first year.. believe me I had horses all my life in the Uk and keeping horses here is a total new ball game... it was like starting all over again.
You will love the hacking here its amazing.
There is an awfull lot of paperwork needed your best bet is to talk to the guys at the complejo who import the race horses from the UK, my mare was picked up in Jerez by a lorry transporting race horses to Las Palmas they had huge boxes where they travelled individually and on board vet plus cctv in each box ... cost me over a 1000 Euro just from Jerez ! then an extra 400 from Las Palmas to here plus all the cost of the vets checks and paperwork.. but worth every penny.
The guy who transported her here I think does regular trips but I lost his number I am sure I could ask the guys at the complejo for his name.. small point.. he only speaks Spanish.
