hi all  Roll Eyes, we're coming out to Lanzarote in December for an extended stay. When we've stayed before we have changed our money in the electrical shops, with no commission. Are we still able to do this, only I've read that a lot of the shops aren't bothering now because of the bad state of the pound/euro.  Huh
Would appreciate any help please on the best way to exchange our money.
Cheers

Hi Linda & welcome to the forum.
I have changed money in various shops along the Strip when I've been over, so I can't reccomend any 1 shop in particular. I do tend to have a bit of a walk & see who "if anyone" is offering the best rate. And to be perfectly honest, they're all more or less the same.
The one shop that quite a few people used to reccomend though was a place called Vnish. I think it is half way along the Strip between the old town & the San Antonio hotel ,or somwhere thereabouts. John "overhere" on the forum could possibly give more guidance on that one.
I've been keeping my eye on things of late Linda, as I'm going over for six weeks shortly, and I don't honestly think, with the state of the £ v € that there is a vast amount of difference at the moment, as compared to years gone by that is. Perhaps just a few cents here & there, but nothing drastic. I'm thinking of actually changing 50% of my money in the UK this time, and then taking a chance with the other 50% over in Lanza.
Sorry I can't be of any more help Linda. But I think were all in the same boat at the moment regarding the £ v €.

Hi "again" Linda.  Grin
I've just had a quick look back at your question. The shop that I mentioned above is in Puerto Del Carmen....not sure where ya staying as you didn't say in the post ?
I'm over from mid Dec through January.....Lets just hope that things pick up a bit eh.... Last Christmas I was very lucky. When I arrived I changed quite a considerable amount of cash & got an exchange rate of 1.12€ to the £. 2 days later it had dropped to 98 cents !!

Hi Linda - don't worry... the tobacco shops are still doing it. Which resort are you in - as not all the shops are trustworthy, so we'll point you in the right direction honey

Welcome to the forum by the way!

I wonder if anybody has used a company based in Devon called Crown Currency Exchange. You pre order your money for delivery just before you go on holiday. If I order now for delivery at the start of March 2010, I will get a rate of nearly 117 euros to the pound. Sounds good but are there any catches. Any feedback please.

I personally would be a bit worried as to how they can promise a ate so far into the future - sounds to me like they could be speculating with other peoples money. Something doesn't add up - what do I know I'm no economist -  but, if it sounds to good to be true it probably is as the old saying goes....

Just recently we've mostly been using HiFX and petty much always get market rates on the day (i.e. more than the banks - comparable with xe.com), but that's moving between bank accounts.

I just had a look and they do home delivery for travel money - £4.95 delivery charge under £500 and free over that...

Sorry for the delay in thanking you for your reply Bart. Yes the rates do appear to be too good to be true.I think I will play safe and use the tried and trusted places.

Hi Mick,
Sorry for the dalay in replying to you.  Thanks everso for your tips about the money exchange.. I know the shop you mean on the strip.   We're staying in Costa Teguise this time,   We were in Playa Pocillos last year, and because we were there for 7 weeks, we decided not to take cash, but our debit card.  Is it the norm that you can only withdraw about 100 euros from the cash machine.? and   Is there a bank we can go into to withdraw a bit more, as we're self catering (and we like a drink) 100 euros isn't going to last five minutes and the fees our bank were charging wer ridiculous. .   We haven't got a woolich account which I'm told is fee free, and we can't work out whether we'll be better off bringing a bit of cash in euros, and our debit card, or travellers cheques.
Before we've only been for a week or two at a time, and changed half at home, and half in one of the electrical shops.
I'm confused.com. Huh

Hi

Its the Nationwide that doesn't charge,, not sure about the Woolwich?  I'm sure 300 euros is the norm that you are allowed to take out of a cash machine.. Sorry don't know anything about Costa Teguise.

I think it depends who you bank with Linda... and whether they have a partner here. Abbey National aren't charging for overseas withdrawals now from their owners Santander. I think Sam posted some info about it.

I think there's another solution for you... that might be better as you're here for a longer while than the usual, and will get you a much better exchange rate too - but let me speak to my bank here to see if it's possible first.
