They're planning to take over other banks' customers big time.  I have met the aggressive new management team in Reading and it's part of their mission to be a big bank in the UK, untarnished by govt bailouts etc.

Sounds like it's an account worth investigating.

Excellent news - could you please keep us informed if you hear anything else Steve?

I would like to be able to have an account in the UK for when we're over... but if Santander are doing it in that direction, then they might do it in the other direction too (ie: withdraw for free in UK if account is here).

Hi all. Just a little add-on to Sams post.

Travelex are doing a thing called a "cash passport", backed by Barcley's Bank. It's worth having a little look at. You can set up the account at various supermarkets, Sainsbury's, Co-op etc or direct through Travelex. A friend of mine has been using it for quite some time and says its great. The account is very flexible, and all that you need to take on holiday is the one ATM cashcard.

I was going to look into the Abbey / santander bank link.

Does anyone know if I set up Accounts with Abbey in UK and Sandander in Lanzarote  would I  be able to transfer money from UK to there with no charges.

Would you know if a Lanzarote one qualifies?

(And on the subject of Santander, does anyone know whether they've got an actual, official UK liaison manager yet, rather than just the staff members who can speak English helping out in their spare time. Duff state of affairs in my opinion!)

If you're in Lanzarote the branch of Santander at the harbour end of Calle Limones in Playa Blanca is dedicated to English speaking customers only and has an English manager.

Of course.  I will pm you her details.  I think they have an ex pats branch in PDC too - she will know as before being promoted to branch manager she used to work up there sometimes.

I've just got my mits on one of these and I don't have a mortgage with them. Actually, rereading not sure if it's the same thing - I've just got their credit card that has no fees abroad.
