16/06/10

good game 2nite, we won 14-2, but it was very hot and sunny in stockport so it was a toughie - which wasnt due to talented oppo's but toasty conditions. My game started well enough - the younger lads we were playing with a bit of gusto about them. our youngest lad tom had a game that made me wonder if it was someone else in a tom mask! hes not the fastest lad but he has been putting loads of effort in recently and has developed his defensive game well over the recent months. problem has always been his lack of confidence in shooting and going forwards. anyway he started the game same as normal but just before half time we got a penalty and he started shying away from it as he would always take a back seat as he doesnt kid himself that there are better players on the team. anyway i told him he should have it as he had basically won it for us by pressuring their keeper. so i kinda told him he should have it since we were ahead by about 5 at this time so it wouldnt matter if he missed it (also we had another penner earlier which a different lad basically passed to the keeper instead of shooting with some effort, lol)
anyway he stepped up to take it and did the slow down step and gave the keeper the eyes - waited for him to move, and then finished his step up and buried it in the opposite top corner. F****ng class. ronaldo-esque. he then proceeded to playthe 2nd half like he was on crack. he was a different player altogether. shooting from distance (which we have been asking him to do for 8 months, running at players jinking past them, hitting the ball 1st time (which we have been asking him to do forever). brilliant. he scored a messi goal later where he beat 2 players on a run from our area to theirs and then smashed it in. we were well chuffed for him. took the attention of my amazing goal with his antics (mine was a smart finish from half way line - took a touch with my left foot to control it and then instantly shot with my right into the bottom left corner. keeper didnt even try moving as it flew past him before he knew it, it was a good one). our other lad who typicaly doesnt bother coming back to defend seemed to ride on this young lads confidence tailwind and scored a few good goals and got bk for once. so the two typically weaker lads probably bossed the game more than anyone (myself included) and if they continue like that all season we will win the league by a country mile. really enjoyed it in the end and our keeper had two class saves so he wasnt bored for the entire game. although stading in the direct sun for an hour put a bit of colour on his face  Cheesy  was happy afterwards as every single lad did his job 2nite which seems to be a rarity in this team although thatll come in time. But isn't that the best thing ever in playing football.

Yes, we've all scored wonder goals and had those "perfect games" where everything that you try comes off and that's great but I think the best individual thing that I ever did in five a side football was to make a young kid with absolute nil ability and zero confidence into a world beater for two consecutive games.

The relish with which he dished out "stick" to his elder brothers (who could play) in the changing room afterwards was a joy to behold.
It was like Cinderella.

Mind you, it took months to achieve it and after his two "wonder weeks" he was back to nearly the same as before, but for those two weeks, WOW !!

cant honestly say it was all me that turned him into the player he was last nite as hes put the graft in himself - just showed how a little bit of confidence can have such a drastic influence on the way he played - just glad he scored the pen as if it had gone the other way you dont know what type of performance mite have occured 2nd half.....

I used to play badminton with a couple of teachers at school during my lunch breaks (I and my maths teacher used to kick the butts of two PE teachers. I could hold my own back then - but haven't picked up a racket ever since.

7/7/10

played the team we played about a month back where it was a 2-0 loss for us and we struggled having no sub and they had one. well this time they had no sub  Grin  but neither did we  Angry first half started ok, they managed to go 1-0 after 5 minutes after some very slow defending from our back 2 Sad but after another 5 we managed to pull one back through the magical left peg of a certain fotballing hero  Cheesy he let the player come across his path on the right wing and then as he was stretching for the block, a sharp ping along the floor to the bottom right corner flew past the keeper who to be fair would have struggled even if he did have a clear view of it. so 1-1 after i did what i do best. they snatched a flukey one just before half time when a tackle from one of our lads hit another player and bounced back into their strikers path one on one with our keeps and they managed to bag it. so 2-1 down at half time. I didnt manage another goal for the whole game unfortunately Sad 2 men marking me too often but it did lead to our young lad who improved so much over the last few matches to bag 2 in the 2nd half! Grin problem was that they got 4 more so we ended up on a 6-3 loss. Very frustrating as we can beat this side but our players need a sub or we struggle fitness wise too much (a certain footballing hero more so than others  Grin) to keep the pace of play at a high level. Ran my socks of last nite but same story against a side that are fairly well organised at the back and have a couple of players who can turn their pace up a notch to power past slow defenders and get a clear shot on goal. if we get our numbers back up to having a sub then i think we can edge teams like this. 31/07/10 - Random 6 a side game

so our keeper got the phone call yesterday that a mates game was short and we needed players to fill the hall. so we duly oblied since he has filled in for us before and plus its a game of football as well so, u know Wink

so i wont go into great detail on the match for this one but it was a good one - indoor so sweltering heat but considering that i havent played for about 3 weeks it was needed. we won the match 13-10 after a tight final 10 minutes before we clinically put the match to bed in the final 5 (done so by a lad who wasnt great in the first half but transformed into the deadliest most lethal finisher in the world for 5 minutes.

i played in nets for two sets of 5 minutes, and only let one goal in  Grin and i made several ok saves and one schmeichel-esque fingertip save from a 400mph rocket onto the bar which just stayed the right side of the line when bouncing down (although i bet a uruguayan linesman would have said it was over tho Angry calm down LeFtY, the world cup is over now). and it was from our mate so i was able to give him the cheeky wink to let him know he was getting nothing from me, lol.

so my outfield performance was good. considering i hadnt played for about 3+ weeks i imagined that i would be blowing out my **** after 5 minutes. but i managed to miss a few chances early on (just to drop their defence into a false sense of security of course..... Tongue) but after a few more minutes i started to stay a bit further up top and then started smashing the goals in. I think the best ones were when i intercepted a final ball in our defence and sprinted all the way up to their end and smashed a LeFtY special across the keeper into the opposite bottom corner. then i of course walked away all nonchalantly  Cheesy I also got a few nutmegs of their various keepers and i think i ended up on about 6 or 7 goals. should have had 10 tho  Roll Eyes

Happy with the win tho, and a good warm up for wednesday nite  Smiley

4/08/10 - Dynamo's 5 a side

last 2 matches of the season.

Match 1 - same story as always, we only just got 5 players. they had 2 subs. not want you want to have when there are 2 games to play one after the other. Anyway, recognised a lad who i used to sit with in all my lessons at college playing for the opposition prior to kick off, so had a quick natter and then obviously had an extra dose of motivation for winning the match. so we started slowly. well, i started slowly. felt a bit unfit but gained some pace after 5 mins. scored the first after a snapshot from halfway line the keeper didnt have time to adjust having not anticipated it coming. so a good start and we managed to pick up another 2 before half time before letting one in which was my fault - bad pass from a team mate to me, which when i tried to stop their player from intercepting i was too far away from. couldnt reach far enough to get a proper purchase on the ball and theyre player managed to catch it up and sneak it in. frustrating as if i was another 2 inches taller id have got it. so halftime we were 3-1 up. came out the traps flying in the 2nd half. dominated them after i missed a sitter. ok, 2 sitters lol  Roll Eyes. rectified that by bagging another 2 in as many minutes tho. one was very thierry henry like  Grin Won 9-3 (i think) in the end. good match and great effort by the boys. LeFtY rating = 6/10

Match 2 - tired after game one. opposition hadnt played one before us so they were fresh. was kinda hoping for the fat kids team but no joy. all 6ft+ and all fit lads about 28ish. gutted. we went 1-0 after 30 seconds. and then got played off the park for the rest of the first half but somehow we were only 2-1 down at half time. was a tough match as they seemed to give fouls away every time they tackeld us but were very apologetic after each one. every single one. so we kicked into gear for the second half. really took it to them and managed to equalise and go behind and equalise and go behind etc. got a little frustrating however since they persisted with their kick the player at every tackle tactic and the ref would give the free kick to us but would say 'its nothing malicious' - regardless of the fact we were up to foul number 3,840 by their team. f****ng referees Angry so we pushed and pushed for an equaliser and never got their. 2 of their 2nd half goals could have been stopped if our players had sorted themselves out sharper than they did but the real sore point was the fact the ref did nothing after watching them systematically ruin the match by using absolute gamesmanship to win. next time were playing their way and well see who wins when everybody cheats. Lost by one goal. veeeeeerrrry annoyed. couldnt fault any of our team for effort as we were shattered after the first match. LeFtY rating = 8/10

ok so its been nearly 2 weeks since i played but ill put brief recap in

12/08/10
Played against the same team who cheated us out of it last week,  but was the first game of the new season so its a chance to beat them and set off flying and prove that we can do them.
unfortunately only had 5 players and our regular keeper was away so up til about an hour prior to kick off we only had 4 players but managed to sneak a keeper in last minute *phew* i did not fancy playing in nets. so with a better ref we started brightly and totally bossed the match throughout. ended up winning by 3 goals (5-2 or 6-3, i forget now) but a truly satisfying match and never really out of our hands throughout. came off with the smugest face after proving what we can do when we are allowed to Grin

18/08/10

2nd match of the new season, could we make it 6 points from 6??
yes. did we?HuhHuhHuhHuh?

yes. our opponents for the night were called "probably gonna lose" and if you dont turn up for the match then thats definately gonna be the case.

but there was another team who had their opponents not show as well so we had a friendly against them.

they looked about 18 years old and nippy before we started. so we thought its gonna be a run around today. correct, but for them not us. we won 18-1. was fuming about the 1, as if our defenders had got back then we could have kept our keepers sheet clean but if they wanna be lazy and ruin our number 1's game then thats up to them. honestly he didnt have much more to do that match so they kinda did spoil his in involvement. Anyway, we all scored about 3 or 4 each and i bagged a couple of cheeky ones - my 4th benig a bit tasty threaded throughball that split 3 players to me stood 10 yards outside the area near the left wing and just as the ball approached (with some zip on it) last minute i decided a quick snapshot would decieve their keeper so in the last half second before it reached me i pulled the magic leftboot back and smashed it into the near top corner first time. was no chance any keeper was gonna get it. anyway was a lot of running round involved and we came off shattered but it was a very easy game, people just put more effort in as they knew they could bag a hatful if they moved for the ball. happy faces its just a shame it wasnt a league match as a no-show opponent means an automatic 10-0 win. so our goal difference would have been better if they took our actual result. LeFtY rating = 8/10 (but thats would have been a 9 against a proper team, lol)

1/09/10

2 games and they were both ages ago so theyll b brief.

game 1 - lost it about 10-7. we werent very good, i scored only 1 if i remember correctly. tough match. LeFtY rating = 5/10

game 2 - played a team who had just had an 11 a side 90 minute match prior to kick off. thank god as we were knackered from the above game. scored one good goal in a very tight match we edged 5-3 at the end. enjoyable as they were all big blokes wearing real madrid kits thinking they were the business (hopefully theyll have played 90 minutes before our next match too tho Grin) LeFtY rating = 6/10
