Hi,
Can you tell me the procedure to see a Dr here please? My son had a cold last week and now it appears to have gone to his chest. I have bought over the counter meds but he may need antibiotics now. I have no idea where to begin.
We have the E11 cards but dont know if we can (should) use them.
As alway, grateful to you all.

You can use those cards Linda... but not for long as you are supposed to register with the social security here. Once you have your NIE number, and are paying into the system... speak to Ben or your Employer who should be able to give you your social security number (it is different number to your NIE). You then take that, and your passport to the nearest Doctor (sorry I don't know the Carmen state doctors) and they will set you up with a Doctor and give you an appointment.

It can be a little nerveracking apparently because of the language (I still haven't joined a Playa Blanca Doctor... but have used the hospital in Arrecife) but at least you can use your card for until you are sorted out. Remember to take your passport along too honey.

If you really are too nervous to do this right away (and don't worry... you're far from alone) then you can visit a private doctor. I highly recommend Miguel at www.britishsurgeryoflanzarote.com His surgery is diagonally right... opposite the San Antonio hotel in PdC. he is a lovely chap... speak fluent English (NHS trained) and will sort you out. Do give him my love... I keep meaning to get down to him myself on some other matters.

Good thing to know is that prescriptions here are very VERY cheap!  Also... if you know exactly what you want - or even better have some packaging - then take it to a chemist... as some medicines aren't considered as prescription only. The Farmacias aren't supposed to give out antibiotics without a prescription but one or two do use their noggins when making that decision.
