Only as a "nice" shopkeeper from the other end of Chorlton.
Because we were from Nicolas Road, over by Longford Park we used the more local (to us) shops such as Salo's and Kay's but once we became teenagers then we spent a lot more time over at the Beech Road end of Chorlton, once we started buying the draught cider from the "Offy" over there and drinking in The Horse and Jockey.
(Once we reached 18 though, we became a bit overage for "The 'Jockey")
I knew Mr Etchells though as his was the only shop that sold "Spanish Gold" which was long stringy sugary coated liquorice string that didn't particularly taste of liquorice. It came in a pouch and looked like pipe tobacco.
There is a story that I saw repeated in the online news that his shop sold more copies of the Guardian newspaper than any other shop in the country outside London.
I know that for many years his shop was like The Old Curiosity Shop/Aladdin's Cave with many little nooks and crannies and massively overstocked, security must have been a nightmare.(oddly my shop in Cornwall, was just the same, but it means that the customers could come in every day and find something they'd not noticed before)
But, RIP to a nice guy, he was a nicer shopkeeper than me.

Sorry to butt into your thread Bob but Smokie, I've been trying to remember the name of that stuff for months and nobody I asked had ever heard of it. Thanks mate.

Hey !  I'm not "dead in a ditch" despite my mother's worst fears.
I was trying to stay off all the forums as I would then be able to watch the football without knowing the scores.

City beat Juve , (i hope ) think i will go to hat match they aretrying to get the same atmosphere at the ground they had a Hamburg

Utd well what do you think , it will be difficult against Valencia at the Mestalla , Valencia top of La Liga and if Utd play the same as they did against Bolton , SmileySmileySmileySmiley

other teams dont care really if not all should get a win or draw

so now you can come on here , as after last weeks predictions mate missing the scores doesnt help

I can remember my Mother saying the same thing Smiley
If I was out after midnight, she would imagine the worst. I may have been in the odd ditch, but usually managed to climb out 'eventually' Wink
