Hi Ritchie - this may or may not be useful to you but I wonder if you've heard of a book called 'Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway' by Susan Jeffers? Sorry I'm way off-beam here but, over the years, a lot of folk - myself included - have found this book helpful when looking at life-changing decisions. Dr Jeffers explains how we can all get stuck on this pain-to-pleasure curve (no obvious double-entendres please - you know who you are  Roll Eyes) and how we often confuse potentially productive anticipation with non-productive fear.

Seems to me everyone is offering the best possible support and advice - especially Elle counseling you to wait and see - perhaps you could do worse than read this book for some 'inner guidance' in the meantime? Just a thought.... Gaia x

Thanks Bob - an odd review but he got there in the end I guess. Just remembered I knew this guy years ago who said 'that book changed my life'. When I asked him to tell me what he thought anbout the book he replied ' didn't read it - just saw the title and that did it for me'. He was serious too!

I haven't read that book, but fully understand the drift, I wish it was as simple as overcoming a fear, it's more complex than that but thanks for the input.

And bob, can you please get a smaller thumb, I keep thinking you're giving me the finger....

Bit late really as your post was in August but my advice is to research the area very well and possibly rent for a while to get he feel  of the place, if you cant do this then I would advise maybe downsizing in UK and buying a smaller place in Lanzarote, either way when you do make up your mind as to location you have a choice.(1) sell in Uk and buy something more substantial in Lanzarote.(2) sell in Lanzarote and buy something better in Uk or (3) keep places in both locations. I would personally try to keep the both but this can be expensive if you are a non resident. We sold our apartment in La Manga last year and our costs were unbeleivable. They charge you more to sell than they do to buy.............we ended up with a loss,so unless  you are thinking of spending the rest of your days in Lanza I would say just come over on holday as often as you can, we have been 6 times in 12 months also visited Marbella, La Manga and Menorca in that 12 months. We are retired so can do this...are you? There are a lot of expenses when you buy a property and unless it is bought as an investment then I would not bother. There are probs with wills and who inherits etc and the charges are not the same as in the UK even though Spain is part of the EU. Good luck but do think long and hard before spending your hard earned cash.............oh by the way we are still fighting for our 3% retention tax to be paid back 18 months on, if it ever does. We actually find it cheaper to go on holiday every 6-8 weeks than it did to pay for our apartment with all its utilities etc. Anyway hope its been useful and the best of luck. xx Squiggs

EmbarrassedSorry Ritchie have just read the rest of the posts and now know you are retired..........my advice, sell your large property, I mean who needs all the cleaning, we did and downsized. Buy a nice easy property back home and just take yourself off wherever and whenever you feel. Works for us and the interest we earn on one of our Isa's pays for two of those holidays. We would not buy again in Spain because we don't want to end up losing more money again, soooooo do what is right for you and enjoy life, don't spend to much time thinking about it cos it sure does move quick once you are over 60. You never know if you are around between 16-23 Jan we may bump into one another. Take care  lol  Squiggs  Cool Grin Kiss

Thanks Squiggs but a bit late, already bought a place here in PB, been around a bit but there's nowhere else I'd rather be than here, will be heading back home on the 19th Jan so might see you around Le Moka,  best place to eat around the area, believe others off this site go there too but never met any of them yet, maybe we should wear a badge with the blog nickname name on it....
