Los Helichos is the area between Maguez and Guinate, and at the moment, the fields are like Alpine meadows, with long grass and wildflowers.  It's a simple 2 hour stroll along a driveable track, starting by going down the turn for the Tropical Park. I took these photos yesterday on a recce for a group walk on 6 Mar.

That's mighty fine John and you would be forgiven for thinking you were in England.

Lovely photos John!  Not at all what you would expect to see in lovely Lanza!  Makes me wish I was there now!

As Mrs B has bad knees, and is pretty determined, but too slow for the walking group, I took her around the Los Helichos circular walk today, starting anfd finishing in Maguez.  At the risk of boring people, the wildflowers are getting more spectacular day be day at the moment.  It is possible to drive around the route, and I was astonished the there were about 40 cars up there.  It's a really pretty plateau at the base of a hill both of which are covered in lush grass, and carpeted in yelly, purple, blue, and a few red, flowers.  The Viper's Bugloss is the most prominent with bell-like flowers in all shades from blue to red on the same plant.  And here's the clincher, you're looking down and across to Graciosa! So, it's a favourite picnic area, and it seemed that half of Arrecife was up there in family groups, picnicking.  It's really somethng seeing kids running around in a meadow of long, lush grass, and a myriad of flowers - this is sun-scorched Lanzarote for heavens sake! I've only included one photo this time, but I think it shows you what the land looked like - I'm only in it for scale!

John I can't believe you haven't had loads of responses - that is fabulous!  A top experience in Lanzarote in the winter.  It will have all dried up again by the time we get back in April.

The flowerrs were even better yesterday.  I strongly recommend going to see them.  For the less mobile, it's perfectly possible to drive an ordinary car around the whole route, but you need to stop often to appreciate what you are looking at.

Well, I suppose you could call them weeds if you define weeds as non-cultivated flowers - ie not wildflowers which have been selectively bred to make garden flowers!  Smiley But where they are, I'd just call them wild flowers, as I would in a similar setting in England.  They are nearly all the same species you get in there: Speedwell, Viper's Blugloss, Vetch, daisies, poppies, Egg and Bacon, Charlock, Lavender, Garlic, Fennel, etc.
