Revisted Caldera Blanca today.  It's NW of the Timanfaya visitor centre, and is reached by a path from Tinajo. The attached photo shows the highest point of the rim from the opposite side 1000 metres away - it is huge, the rim is over 3 Km around (Flash could use his mountain bike). The tiny fuzzy points on the highest skyline are people! The other photo is from the highest point.  It's a pity it was a bit hazy, because the view across to Alegranza is spectacular.

Am taking the kids around a much smaller Caldera (Montaña Gaida) next week as they have wussed out of going out with the walking group on Sunday in favour of going to watch UD Lanzarote, just showed them these photos and told them that this is the one we will be walking around, they have gone strangely quiet!

Good pictures John.
Maybe they could pump it full of sea water and create an inland lake.
Great for practicing sailing and even Kayaking Wink

There is a path down, used by hunters I believe, but  you'd need the feet of a mountain goat and no imagination to use it.

Since it's several hundred feet deep, you could use it for deep sea diving training too!

Looks a bit vertical for me John. I'm looking forward to walking with you when we're over - can't remember what you said the group will be doing.

Is the 'group' open to anyone? (well, to those who don't think they'll keel over Cheesy)

Great pics by the way.

You miss most of the island by just driving by.
It'd be nice to see some of the places that the majority of people don't get to see.

We're doing that one Josie, the photo is from the recce! Don't worry, most of the walk is on the level, and there is about a 15 minute climb to the lowest point of the rim to look into the crater.  It's not scary, because the rim is about 60 feet wide there.  Walking around to the high point and back would take too long for the group, some of who are pushing 70! The views though are amazing.

ED, the group is open to anyone who has got a decent pair of trainers or boots.  Next time you're over, you're welcome to join us.  The one tomorrow is through the fields around Conil, a very gentle walk but lovely countryside.
