Has anyone caught this series on the discovery channel ? I watched it tonight, I think it may have been the last in the series, it was titled "safety"
It was about the 35 engineers who stayed at their posts until the very end, saving the lives of the 710 survivors. I bet Clanky would have loved it !
It also featured the monument to those same engineers being refurbished in Southampton. One of the guys who died was an 18 year old apprentice electrician from Belfast. Excellent programme.

I saw something the other day that was on about how the shipping company sent bills to the cabin boys parents charging them for the brass buttons after it went down..

I will have to look out for that, might see if it's available to view online or in DVD version.  All joking aside, it is quite remarkable when you look at some disasters just how much bravery people find inside themselves, from the engineers who stayed in the engine room of the Titanic, knowing that they were going to die, but that by staying there they would allow the evacuation of a few more people, to the firefighters who ran into the world trade centre in 2001.  When I was on cruise ships we always used to joke about the fact that in an emergency the fire parties would take one look and disappear into the lifeboats, but in every emergency or near emergency that I have been involved in the reactions of the people involved, from the senior oficers to the cabin stewards has been fantastic.

That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest Keith, I know that during the war seamen where taken off pay from the minute they abandonned ship.
