Just finished watching the coen brothers re-make of the classic western, I was blown away, amazing movie !
Mattie Ross played by Hailee Steinfeld was outstanding, but Jeff Bridges still managed to steal the show as Rooster Cogburn, in my opinion it's the best role he has ever played. Matt Damon and Josh Brolin were both excellent, but totally outclassed by the two main characters. I can't recommend this movie highly enough, the story, the acting, everything about it was quality. I watched the blu-ray and the cinematography was breath taking.
If you liked the original, you have to see this, it's a totally different movie, but it really is a must see, I'm giving it a 10/10

I love the Coen brothers. Liked the movie but it was missing something for me that might have made it great - could have just been a little bit 'starker' for my taste...

got to agree alan, definitely missing something.

I think possibly my favourite role for Jeff Bridges was in 'Blown Away'. Great film.

I loved the original film, but to be honest I was a bit disappointed by this modern remake.

Jeff Bridges did a pretty good job, but far short of the John Wayne performance in my honest opinion.  He was gritty and tough, but I struggled to understand what he said any time he spoke!

Maybe I looked forward to seeing remake too much so that's why I was disappointed, or perhaps the fact that I was early teens when little Mattie graced the Silver Screen for the first time had something to do with it!

Worth a watch still, but definitely wouldn't be putting this movie into my Top 10 of 2011.

God movie apart from the closing line which made me feel like throwing the TV I was watching it on out of the window....

Sometimes the memory of an old favourite skews ones perspective ? To be honest I liked big John when I was younger, but I was never a fan, and without trying to be controversial, I don't think he could act ! No matter what character he played , it was always John Wayne, whether it was a cowboy, a fighting Seabee, a centurion, red Adair, it was always John Wayne. Ive had this discussion many times with by brother-in-law so many times, he's a huge JW fan. The same can't really be said of Jeff Bridges ?
As for the accent, that's a "feature" of many Coen brothers movies, they seem to have a thing for strong, usually southern accents. Or in the case of Fargo (one of my all time favourites) Minnesota Swedish.
But for me the movie was perfect, the dialogue, the scenery, everything was really authentic.
I've been told before I have strange tastes in movies, Old Boy, Amelie, The big Lebowski, Fight club, In Bruges are all movies I've recommended to friends, and most have been received with mixed reviews.
But anyway, I enjoyed it immensely   Smiley

Yes Jim - I can appreciate where you are coming from.  John Wayne wasn't a great actor, but Rooster Coburn was probably written for him, and as I said before - I WAS that 13 year old Maddie. I could relate to her and everything else that the movie portrayed to me when I was a young teenager.

I love Fight Club, and In Bruges myself, so our tastes are not so different!

True Grit however, just didn't hold enough "grit" for me at the end of the day!

Still, as I said before, it is well worth a watch, and I would be happy to recommend it to friends, but it doesn't make the top 10 list!

It would be a very boring world if we all loved the same stuff!
