I was amazed to read about the earthquake swarm in El Hierro, and that they are making plans in case they need to evacuate.

Have any of the tremors been felt in the rest of the islands?

No, and I've not heard anyone mention it here.  It was in a couple of local news media, but I don't think it's thought to be serious, even for El Hierro.  Mind you, it was Michael Fish that said that!

Funny thing is I've just been studying this due to a link on FB.  It's looking quite serious.

I went on to the Daily Mail and it was the headlines, there was a 3.8 quake yesterday and a huge amount of smaller tremors in the last month, they are preparing in case the volcano erupts. They reported that they are sending the army from Tenerife to help.

It must be less of a story than they have made out if it has not been reported widely in the canaries  Smiley

The map of tremors on the Daily Mail story looks pretty serious.

I'm sure you are right! The point I intended is that it's less of a story here than in the UK red tops.  That forum  looks a little sensationalist too, Josie.

Looks to be a matter for a degree of concern if you live there to me.

Well, you are right.  However, according to La Provincia today, the Canarian Government said at 1700 yesterday (Wed) that there is no imminent threat of an eruption.  The evacuation was from a specific location at risk if the quakes triggered a landslide.  The tunnel linking the two towns was also closed in case the quakes damaged it.

There is no hype just facts  Seismologists have a scientific knowledge and evidence to be worried.  What is more worrying is that the islands are all linked by magma tunnels, and if El Hierro's activity triggers La Palma then that would be catastrophic.

As part of my job as a Senior Meteorologist I was responsible for the seismometers located in Jersey and took a keen interest in the subject.
