Hi all, this may sound like a daft question but next year after many holidays on Lanzarote I fancy making the move, I am now 39, fed up of our winters and summers in the UK, I am self employed working from home which I can do anywhere in the world so I have no financial reason to stay, I will miss family and friends but then again I will only be about 4 hours away. What is it like to meet new people over there if you are single? Its not as though I will be out every week with my regular group of friends and I guess most ex-pats move over as a family, has anyone got experience of this? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

I moved over about 2 years ago now. I came on my own and not knowing anyone. I now have a number of mates over here. There is a large expat community on the island plus if you can speak Spanish the locals are friendly (usually) as well. You need to get out and about though.

I'm not single, but we left family and friends in UK. I have two thoughts. First, wherever you live, get a place with good broadband, which seems to vary between nil and 10 Mb/s within a small area here. It'll be important both for you business, and for contact with friends and family in UK. Second, find social interests here outside of the bar culture. There are quite a few outlets, not always evident, such as the walking group I belong to, but any one of them will allow you to network into other interest groups, except bars which tend to act as fly paper.
Clearly, learning Spanish would also be beneficial.

I dont live there but I do go over a few times a year. I've also been going for years but lately I have also taken to going over on my own. Having visited as part of a couple, and also on my own, I personally find it extremely easy meeting people as a single person, but that might be because people take sympathy on me! lol
No seriously though, I've never found it a problem, but then as I say I dont live there, only visit, and already have a good selection of friends over there.
I would say if you dont try it, you'll never know!

No Gilly - it's because you're hot! MrZandos - all joking aside... you've been given some good advice on here. Don't worry - you'll have a blast! However... do beware of some of the single ladies on the islands - there are one or two psychos about... looking for fresh blood! Good luck and have fun! Oh yeah... and welcome to the forum. Elle xx

Thanks for all of the advice and thanks for the welcome. I will keep my eye out for those single ladies looking for fresh blook lol I will probably come over on a holiday in Jan/Feb and look for a decent appartment or villa, would a complex be a good place to move to as I guess finding a villa to rent with a pool could be costly? The Pub, get drunk, repeat will probably happen once or twice a week

These are often one and the same. Remember that it's more expensive in the resorts (with Playa Blanca being the dearest) but you need to weigh that up against travel costs... and taxis home after a late one. Which area are you thinking of moving to? Also - in case you haven't spotted it... have a look at www.lanzaroterelocation.co.ukElle xx

If it's just you... then you might be ok with that amount each month. But yeah... part time work would help.
Do shop around for your accommodation, and watch those finders' fees! The Spanish agents don't charge those - so might be worth you speaking to a few of those too.
