I posted before about being scared about moving over alone but.... About a month ago me and my friends had a weekend away in a cottage in west wales, we always make daft video's (not porn) and next weekend we were going to have an edited viewing but most have commitmennts due to it being 5th of November. It just makes me think that as a single person then I have no reason to stay when all or most of my mates have to have reasons not to go out, I love all my friends and their family commitmments but I need sunshine

When my ex and I were together we looked at moving out, but couldn't really make it work, when we split up I thought "what the hell" and just did it.
I was sitting at home a couple of freezing winters ago and had to walk into town, so I thought stuff it, if I'm going into town anyway I'm going to book a holiday somewhere warm, 2 days later I stepped off the plane in Arrecife and thought "aaahh, this is lovely", very quikly followed by "why am I coming here for 2 weeks when I could live here", 9 months later I arrived and thus a drunk was born.

For me....
I first visited Lanzarote when I was 11....many moons ago and by day 3 I was chatting in shops and making friends and remember helping mam and dad so the shopping (playa blanca was a lot less built up back then 22 years ago) as the forward little English girl lol.. the next few family holidays I begged for us to go tot he same place so we did and and again was back in the fold with my pigeon spanish, by the time I was visiting on family holidays by age 15 my holiday was always me on my own apart from dinner time with my family.
I would go for breakfast on my own, wander around, chat and felt at home. When I was 16/17 and over one of the people in the resort said Id be ideal there as my spanish was at a level I would be more than fine and work wouldnt be a problem but by then I had a boyfriend and college as you do and the prospect of being there on my own was scary.
The last time I was there I was sat in a cafe out near dorado having a coffee on my last day of my holiday. The waiter asked if I was ok and I said I was not looking froward to going back to England and he asked was it because I was having a bad holiday and I said no it is because I feel like Im leaving home to go back to England and he said then why not stay... My mam was with me on that holiday then and we had a very long conversation and it was at the stage where she was asking if I was getting on the plane or not, I was that torn.. again I chickened out.
Jobs and relationships later, all my friends have partners and families, I dont have kids and I still feel like Im just visiting in England.
I think my moment was when I was 11, eating my breakfast of toast and scrambled eggs that I ordered for myself in spanish as a cheeky kid right in the bay at playa blanca...

You sound just like us Lucy. Every time we land, as soon as we step outside it's like, 'ahhh, we're home!' I hope you manage to make the move as soon as you can

and me. Oh but I did it. There wasnt a defining moment with me as such just a gradual realisation that I wanted to give living here a go. 14 months later so far so good :-).

For us it was one particularly stressful morning at the office that made it concrete. Alan and I had been toying with the idea for months... but this particular day was a real corker at work. Alan came into my office and I said "Ok, let's do it!". We hit the lanzarote forums that night and started proper research... and met a few people like Madstock and CeltyGirl. We booked our flights very soon afterwards... and then our friends ànicked because they didn't realise how serious we were. Our families were over the moon and couldn't understand why we hadn't done it earlier. Never looked back... ... ...

We'd been looking for somewhere warm to retire to early, now the children were off our hands. We tried several med islands and countries, then came to Lanzarote 9 years ago, did the other islands, nearly bought in Fuerteventura, but came over to PB to have a look round during the buying process, decided PB was the place, and found a perfect house, so 3 months later, we wound up as owners here. Four years later, we moved over. After 2 and a bit years, we think it's great!

I started coming to lanzarote in the 80's. 81 to be precise. I came a few times in the 80's as I was fortunate as a kid to be taken on holiday in the feb or november kids break and my parents always wanted somewhere warm with long haul so we did lanzarote a few times in a row as well as tenerife. I came with ex's in the 90's when I was in my 20's to 'live it large' lol and came again about 10 years ago. I'm fortunate that I can run my business from anywhere with an internet connection and about 5 years ago started to think about moving abroad. I guess as my good mates had all moved all over the uk for jobs and partners I was seeing them less and my health in the Uk had always suffered for about 9 months of the year with my eczema, hayfever and ashma. I thought what am I doing here when I know a warmer climate helps me. The canaries were the only place I looked at as I wanted it to be reasonably warm all year and you are limited in Europe with that criteria. Lanzarote was the obvious choice. Oh and my health is great here - no hayfever, my asthma bothers me little and my eczema is considerably better (but usually is if I swim in the salt water of the sea!). It's a great place to live if you can fit in with the laid back lifestyle and the bureacratic way of doing some things!
