Watching TV over the Internet is supposed to be a great way to get all the UK channels you want. But how does it work? Can you use the TV like normal or do you have to use the computer screen, can you "tape" programs etc? Is it live? 10 mb is from what I have heard the fastest connection you can get in Lanzarote - is this adequate for watching TV? These are but a few questions - but please feel free to expand on them Chris

Chris, I'm fascinated. I think you originally posted you were coming to live here, but all your questions seem to be about relatively superficial aspects of island life. I assume you know where you are going to live, how you will fund it, taxes, cars, schools, medical issues etc?

I'm honoured to be able to fascinate, John. It's not something I hear very often. Superficial however is something I do hear No, I'm not sure about where to live yet. PDC is a favourite right now, but that may change. I'm a keen tennis player and from what I know there are about 8 high-quality courts in PDC. There is also a golf course nearby - which is a plus. All the questions about food is simply because it's important to me. And TV - well I do spend some time in front of it Issues about cars, where to live, taxes etc do interest me too of course. Any advice will be appreciated. Kind regards, Chris

Kind regards, Chris Hi Chris, on the other issues, I guess you have already had a peek at Elle's relocation site, there's plenty of impartial advice on there about some things. If you look at any of Elle's posts, there's a link to it.

Chris, There are a whole number of ways to watch UK tv online. Some are free and some are paid. You can use the normal online sites like iplayer and 4 on demand IF you can fool them into thinking you are connecting from the UK otherwise they will block you. There are free and paid companies that provide this service (proxy server/ip address). Of course there are many places to download UK programs. Does it work well. Yes mostly. As this is internet based it will go to your computer unless you have a smart TV (that can pick up the internet). Just to add to this. If you are after movies you can still get some sky channels here but need a uk address to subscribe or do it via one of the many satelite dealers here. Or you can subscribe to one of the spanish satelite/cable providers as I believe all let you toggle English language programs into English - I've only used telefonica and digital plus. Lastly kind of along John's line. When you live here TV (especially UK TV) seems less important as really there's maybe only 4-6 weeks worth of days/nights a year that are a bit iffy here. The rest of the time you tend to be outside (or I do).

I don't watch it over the internet... but that's because the connection in our house doesn't sit still long enough to keep it buffered. There are some people that download their tv viewing as torrents from various websites... but I obviously wouldn't post links to those websites on this forum as it's not legal. Plus you generally have to wait until the following day to watch them too.

Thank you ALL for the info I guess TV gets less important when it's nice and sunny outside. Chris

Would never have happened in the UK. The TV License man would have been banging the door down!

we did try the internet tv bit it was 'buggering up' ( technical term for a blonde lass! )my laptop and to be fair i havent really missed anything cos there seems to be nothing but dross on the main channels. and most folk here are too busy working/socialising, tho more of the first less of the second!! to watch a lot of tv, i friend of our's records anything he thinks i might like, dramas etc and sends them out for me, so i suppose your answer depends on what you watch regularly and what you can really live without? which remind me of something from your earlier question as to what we miss out here...... cinema, tho i can speak fairly adaquete spanish its just not good enough to sit thro a film!!

Well i have internet TV and purchased a 'set top box' from my supplier - I get about 15 UK channels - and 5-6 UK radio stations - all of this with a 3MB connection - occasionally it freezes but on the whole not a problem - the set top box I have means that you don't have to have the laptop on to view the TV but you haven't got the facility to 'pause/rewind/record' so if there's anything that I have missed and want to watch then I use expat shield and HDMI it to my TV but ....................... as others have said TV over here is not a priority
