On BBC 1 in two parts, tonight at 9pm and again next week. It was excellent. Worth catching up with if you missed it.

I can't remember all that jumping backwards and forwards in time in the book but perhaps it was there. Mr J watched it on BBC 1 in the hotel in Germany (we licence payers should complain) and said he couldn't understand what was going on. I think reading the book even ages ago helped. I thought they made quite a good job of what has apparently been voted the best sex scene in a novel.

I enjoyed the book, but perhaps not as much as some - Flash for instance, I think. The TV version seemd to stress the sex dressed up as love more than the war scenes, and the tunneling parts seemed to be less in evidence than in the book, but perhaps they'll figure next week more. I know the TV version was deliberately slow and sedate, but I found my mind wandering. I'm also glad we had subtitles, because most of the actors mumbled.

It was marginally better, but there were some big holes and it was still too slow.

Yes I really enjoyed the book, the tv was good but fell well short of the book, didn't like how the love angle was the main focus, actually they didn't seem sure which angle to focus on.
The tunnelling was a big thing for me in the book, I felt the whole story brought home the true horror of the trenches and how it affects people - the drama didn't do that for me.
When Firebreak loses his son in the book it was one of the most moving pieces of writing I've read ("he was the best of me") so while a little disappointing it was still better than 90% of the muck we get served up on tv so worth the effort.

Old age will do that to you! I'm also glad we had subtitles, because most of the actors mumbled.
And that!

Mr J thought it was a load of rubbish. I enjoyed it though it was a bit slow. The tunnelling made me feel really claustrophobic.

It was all the staring meaningfully into the distance, combined with background "music " which would be useful as sonic water torture that did it for me. If that was meant to emulate birdsong, they could have done better than the monotony of a collared dove.
